The 26-tear-old joined the Gunners as a 16-year-old but saw his decade long association with the club come to an end this week after he was officially released, having failed to to deliver on the initial promise he showed as a youngster.
His 171 appearances for the club were peppered by disciplinary problems and he was sent out on loan several times to Birmingham, Juventus and Sunderland, though he failed to make any significant impact for the latter.
Despite his unspectacular record in domestic football, at international level Bendtner has been more impressive, with 26 goals in 56 games for his country, including scoring at the 2010 World Cup.
Now a free agent, the Saints are thought to be willing to offer him a lifeline back into the Premier League as they are desperate to add some more players to the squad after losing the likes of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana to Liverpool and Luke Shaw to Manchester United.
