Arsene Wenger hopes to secure an £8m deal to sign the Greek international as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who has left for Barcelona.

The north London side have firmed up their interest in the 23 year old and are happy to meet the Athens based club’s valuation.

Manolas pulled out of his side’s friendly against Athletic Bilbao last night, this being seen as a tacit admission that he may be set for a summer exit.

Wenger is looking for back-up options to his first choice centre-back pair Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker though can, at a push, opt to use youngster Calum Chambers who impressed on his senior debut in the role during Arsenal’s Community Shield win over Man City last weekend.

The north London side have already brought in Chilean Alexis Sanchez, keeper David Ospina, Newcastle United full-back Mathieu Debuchy and the aforementioned Chambers.
