Arsenal are edging closer to securing a deal to sign midfielder Sami Khedira after he was dropped by Real Madrid for their upcoming Spanish Super Cup tie with Atletico Madrid.

The Marca claim that the Bernabeu side’s decision to omit the 27 year old from their squad for the clash is a tacit admission that the World Cup winner is a player they are looking to offload.

This source reiterates Chelsea’s continued interest in the German international but it’s Arsenal who have most frequently been linked with the strong midfielder in recent weeks and some sources claim that Arsene Wenger could snap up the former Stuttgart man at a reduced price as Real Madrid seek to sell one or two big names so as to balance their books.

A number of sides are said to be hot on the heels of the former Stuttgart man but Khedira is thought to favour a move to the Emirates Stadium, not least because he is hoping to team up with his good friend, and national team colleague, Mesut Ozil at the north London outfit.

Arsenal had been chasing Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to this end but moves for both have stagnated and Wenger may therefore be all the more convinced Khedira is the right man for the job.
