Arsenal Linked With Move For Vastly Experienced Free Agent Defender

Arsene Wenger considering centre back Mario Yepes.

Arsenal news

Arsenal are lining up a shock move for centre back Mario Yepes on a free transfer, report Colombian media outlet Antena 2, with Arsene Wenger having failed to secure defensive cover before the 2014 summer transfer window slammed shut on Monday evening.

Free agents can still be signed outside of the window, however, and, providing that there is space in the club’s squad, can be registered to compete in the Premier League.

Yepes remains without a club and had been believed to have retired after his impressive performances for Colombia at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but the report suggests that he could be lured back into playing by the Gunners, who are desperate for defensive cover with just six senior options for the back line at the club.

The 38 year-old was released by Atalanta last season and has spent the latter part of his illustrious club career in Serie A, where he has turned out for the likes of Chievo Verona and AC Milan after a spell in France with Nantes and Paris Saint Germain. He also played in his native Colombia, with Cortulua and Deportivo Cali, and also Argentina with River Plate.

Signing such a veteran may seem like something of a step back to some Arsenal fans, but the Colombian would undoubtedly offer them experienced cover at the back, at least until the January transfer window opens.
