United tried unsuccessfully to sign the Chilean playmaker during the summer transfer window, and are still believed to be on the look-out for a new midfield general.

And according to reports in the Daily Star, United could allow Spanish star Mata to move to Turin to January, in a final attempt to lure the Italian champions into selling their prize asset.

Despite only arriving at Old Trafford in January, Mata has dropped down the pecking order with new United manager Louis van Gaal, who is likely to favour new signings Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

According to the source, Juventus have already sounded out his representatives about joining them, knowing that United have not yet abandoned their interest in Vidal, and a player-plus-cash deal is possible.

A swap move could suit both teams with United still short of quality in midfield despite signing Danny Blind from Ajax, and the Italians looking for more firepower.

Juventus could offer Mata a quick return to the Champions League this season providing their European campaign goes according to plan. And Vidal would have three months to prove he is free of the knee injury which put Louis van Gaal off sanction- ing a bid for him this summer.
