Bayern’s new signing rejected Chelsea & Man City.Bayern Munich’s new signign Mehdi Benatia has revealed that he rejected the chance to sign for Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City this summer, according to ESPN.
The Bavarian giants won the race for the signature of the rock-solid Moroccan international, who was in immense form for AS Roma to attract interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs, also including Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, the 27-year-old could have ended up playing in England this summer if things had gone differently, though he has explained that he was happy with life at the Stadio Olimpico, with an offer from Bayern proving the most tempting one available to him, and one that was difficult to turn down.
Benatia added that he feels Bayern are one of the top four clubs in the world, and is delighted to be with a team who challenge for major trophies every season.
“I felt great at Roma right from the beginning,” he explained.
“We finished second, and all was great for me. I scored five goals and even captained the team. The people trusted me, and I did not think that I’d be leaving Rome.
“I did not want to miss out on that opportunity when Bayern voiced their interest. I perceived the offer as a huge chance, and told Sabatini that I wanted to join Bayern.
“Bayern are one of the top four clubs in the world. They play for every title year in, year out. You don’t reject such an offer.”
The defender is now set to come up against his old club Roma in this season’s Champions League group stage, and says he is fully prepared from jeers and whistles from his old supporters, even though he is delighted to be returning to face them.
