The Red Devils were linked with the Chilean international for much of the summer transfer window, but eventually missed out on his signature as they prioritised the signings of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

Still, Louis van Gaal remains keen on bringing in Vidal as he looks to strengthen in central midfield, with Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira also thought to be under consideration in that part of the pitch.

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels’ name has also been mentioned again, as United still look in need of further additions in defence after losing Nemaja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the end of last season.

After a summer of big spending, the new arrivals certainly look likely to continue at Old Trafford, with van Gaal attempting to revolutionise the squad at United after their highly disappointing 7th place finish in the Premier League last season.

The signing of Vidal would be a big help for the club, who have long struggled in their attempts to find a top class midfield player to replace the recently-retired club legend Paul Scholes.
