There has been much recent debate about what Wilshere’s best position on the pitch is, with the 22-year-old having already filled in in a number of different midfield roles in his short career so far.
Although Wenger has tended to use Wilshere in a more advanced role in his Arsenal team, the England international has been used mainly as a deep-lying defensive midfielder by Hodgson for the national side – a role that the Gunners boss believes is a waste of his talent.
The Frenchman explained that Wilshere can offer more when he is allowed freedom to use his dribbling skills and creativity in the final third of the pitch.
Still, Wenger maintained that he would be happy to see the player used in any role that works as he hopes to see him progress from a promising youngster to a more polished and consistent performer.
“I personally prefer Jack Wilshere in a more advanced position than in a deep-lying role as a midfielder,” he said.
“If it works [playing deeper], it works and I am very happy for him but I think he is a guy capable of creating danger in the final third. He is provocative in his dribbling and I would like to use this quality.”
Wilshere played as England overcame Switzerland 2-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier, with Gunners new-boy Danny Welbeck scoring twice on the night.
