Van Gaal claimed that he had never had to deal injury problems this bad before despite managing since the early ’90s.

The Dutchman has nine players injured and Tyler Blackett is suspended after being sent off against Leicester. It means that Marcos Rojo is the club’s only fit senior central defender available to him.

“I have to admit that I’ve never been in this situation before. Never. So this is strange. That is also what I have said in former press conferences. So for me it’s difficult to understand because we are evaluating what we can do in a different way,” he said.

However, Van Gaal did extend the invitation to the stars coming in as replacements to take their chances.
