Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal admitted that the forward was a target for the 20 time league champions while the player himself has stated his desire to return to Old Trafford one day.

However, Real have told their star player that they have no intention of letting him walk away from the Santiago Bernabeu and are refusing to even discuss a price with United.

Despite scoring 10 goals already this season, Ronaldo has had a strained relationship with the Real hierarchy especially after they sold star players Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso during the summer.

With the 29 year old expressing his ‘love’ for United, some fans had hoped that he could be prized away from the Spanish capital.

Unfortunately, even if Ronaldo could persuade Real to let him leave, it would cost a huge amount of money for United to sign him as the Spanish giants would want to recoup most of the £80 million they paid for him in 2009.

Also, although the Portuguese star would accept a pay cut to return to the Theatre of Dreams, he does consider his status as the highest earning player in the world as a badge of honour and just matching his current contract would cost United £594,680 when considering current exchange rates.
