The star also rules out ever leaving Barcelona.
Barcelona star Lionel Messi has played down his rivalry with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo by insisting that he is only interested in winning titles with the Catalan giants, Goal.com reports.
The pair have won the last six Ballon D’Or awards between them but despite his achievements often being measured alongside Ronaldo’s, the 27-year-old insists he isn’t interested in a rivalry with the Portuguese star.
“Competing with Cristiano? I don’t feel like competing with him or anyone else,” he told reporters on Thursday. “It’s not about individual awards; I want to help my team.”
Messi is considered as one of the greatest players the world has seen but the Argentine says he is not concerned about where people place him on the list of all-time greats.
“I don’t think about my place in football history,” Messi insisted. “I just want to keep getting better and win trophies with my team.”
Last season, there was speculation that Messi was unhappy with life at the Nou Camp and was considering a move away from the club but the Argentine international has rejected those reports and insists he didn’t think twice about signing a new contract in May.
“Everything went very fast because it was easy,” he stated. “I had no doubts about staying.
“This summer we have signed great players, who have adapted very fast to Barcelona. We have a great group now.”
