The Brazilian international was only recently quoted as saying that this would be his final season with Barca, having been a key player for the club since joining from Sevilla all the way back in 2008.

However, this talk may have been a ploy to earn himself a new deal, and it now looks as though he will deal a transfer blow to Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea by making the decision to continue in Spain.

Alves will pen a new contract keeeping him with Barcelona until 2016, and seemingly remains a key part of the first-team this season despite suggestions over the summer that he could be dropped by new manager Luis Enrique.

Exciting Colombian wide-man Juan Cuadrado was linked with a move to Barcelona as Alves’ replacement, but a move to bring him in from Fiorentina never worked out, and Alves has managed to keep his place in the side.

This will be a blow for the English sides that had hoped to snap him up on a bargain free transfer next summer.
