Ligue 1 big-spenders keen on United star.
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney remains a top transfer target for Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco, according to Spanish source Fichajes.net.
The mega-rich French club signed big names such as Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and Dimitar Berbatov last season, and despite a relatively quiet summer this year, they are readying an ambitious move for Rooney to bolster their squad.
The England international, who scored his country’s winner in a 1-0 win away to Estonia on Sunday evening, has only recently been made captain of Manchester United and it seems unlikely that they will let him go anytime soon.
Still, the 28-year-old is possibly past his peak now and his performances have been met with some criticism in recent times, while he notably came close to leaving Old Trafford last summer after attracting strong interest from rivals Chelsea.
A big-money move to Monaco could be tempting for Rooney at this stage in his career, with the former Everton man having been at United since he was a teenager.
With United themselves keen to raid Monaco for the permanent signing of Radamel Falcao, currently on loan in England, it could be that Rooney will also fall down the pecking order in Louis van Gaal’s side.
