Valdes has been out of contract since the end of last summer when his deal with the Catalan giants ran out. In October, it was expected that the Spaniard would complete a free transfer to Anfield as long as he could prove his long term fitness.
The 32-year-old tore his knee ligaments in March and was ruled out for seven months. This ended the chance of him completing a lucrative move to AS Monaco and the Reds also have concerns about his ability to recover, especially as he is demanding large wages.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers appeared to rule out the possibility of Valdes arriving at the Premier League runners up in an interview with Spanish publication AS.
When asked if he would sign another Spanish player this winter, Rodgers simply replied, “No”.
Now, Liverpool look set to move for another long term goalkeeping target, Neto.
The Brazilian’s contract at Fiorentina expires at the end of the season and his wage demands would be much less than Valdes, possibly as little as £20,000 a week.
