Regular football was more important than linking up with Red Devils.

Recent England call up Nathaniel Clyne has revealed that he rejected the chance to join Manchester United and feels that his decision has been justified by his form for club and country, according to the Daily Mirror.

Clyne, 23, set for his full England debut against Slovenia at Wembley, turned down the chance to go to Manchester United two years ago, in favour of getting more regular football at Southampton.

Two years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson detailed former United chief executive David Gill to go and sign Clyne from Crystal Palace as he was already gaining a reputation as one of the country’s best young right-backs.

However, Clyne feels that the leadership of current boss Ronald Koeman has been the driving force behind his rise to the national team.

“My club are doing ever so well, which means everyone’s looking at us. I’ve been playing pretty well too, which means I’ve been given a chance to play for my country,” he said.

“We’ve got a great team spirit and togetherness. The manager has done really well to bring good players in and knit us all together.

“We’re playing good football and, hopefully, it will continue. I’ve seen a few clips of the manager [Koeman], scoring goals from outside the box – he had a shot on him.

“Sometimes he joins in training in the possession games, and he does well. I’ve been told about his history with England.

“I’ve been given my chance now and I am going to make it count. I am ready for any game, really. If it is against Slovenia or Scotland, I will prepare myself and get myself ready for the game.”
