Goodison Park side look to beat Anfield rivals in move to sign Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez is apparently ahead of Brendan Rodgers in pursuit of Barcelona defender Martin Montoya according to the Liverpool Echo.
Liverpool have been tracking the 23 year old right-back for some months but Martinez will look to use his connections with the Catalan club to win the transfer chase.
Everton will look to bring in Montoya on an initial loan deal ahead of a £7m permanent switch next summer.
The former Spanish Under 21 international only signed a new five year contract a few months ago but has been told by new boss Luis Enrique that he can leave.
Montoya has made just one appearance for Barcelona and is also the subject of interest from Serie A side Napoli.
