The highly-rated centre-back has been linked with the Gunners and with other top European clubs before, having emerged as a top defensive player for his current club.

Still, Arsenal are now thought to be leading the chase for his signature as January approaches, with the player himself keen to move on to a bigger club as he nears the end of his contract.

This could see Arsene Wenger’s side land Schar for just £10m or possibly even less as Basel are resigned to losing him at the end of this season on a free transfer.

Arsenal are in desperate need of new signings in defence and have been linked with a number of big names, though Schar perhaps looks like the best bargain-for-money option available on the market at the moment.

Having sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona during the summer, Wenger failed to find a replacement in time, leaving his team short of options in that part of the pitch, with Nacho Monreal playing out of position in place of the injured Laurent Koscielny.
