The French boss is eager to sign a defensive midfielder to compete with Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta and the Gunners have previously been linked with Sporting Lisbon hardman William Carvalho, who has a £37m release clause.

However, reports are now claiming that Wenger has sounded out Arslan’s agent about a possible move to the Emirates next summer.

The report suggests the German-Turkish midfielder’s contract expires on June 30, 2015 and is demanding £40,000-a-week to move to the Emirates Stadium.

The 24-year-old began his career with Borussia Dortmund but decided to join Hamburg in the summer of 2009.

After initially struggling to break into the staring XI in Hamburg he has now fully established himself as a first team regular, though the side are struggling for form this season.
