This will be good news for Premier League clubs, with many being linked to a move for the exciting forward. As the Spanish giants apparently don’t have a deal in place for the German, they will still be able to swoop in either January or the summer if they wish to sign him.

If Reus were to leave the Signal Iduna Park then he would not be the first high profile name in recent times to do so, as both Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have left for rivals Bayern Munich in the last two years.

Watzke did admit that it is not down to the club if the player leaves, and that the star will have to make his own choice.

“It’s complete rubbish that there is any kind of right of first refusal [for Madrid],” he told the German paper Bild.

“Marco alone will decide where he will go. What would we do if he activated his clause?”

The former Champions League finalists are currently bottom of the Bundesliga, and are under pressure to improve. Reus’ ankle injury is one of the reasons that they have been vastly under-performing.
