Premier League sides looking to lure Raphael Varane away from the Bernabeu.
Manchester United and Chelsea are gearing up for a summer tug-of-war over the signing of Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane, report the Daily Star, as it looks increasingly likely that the young Frenchman will be leaving the Bernabeu in search of increased first team opportunities.
Varane finds himself behind Pepe and Sergio Ramos in the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti, despite the fact that the former Lens man can be considered as one of the world’s finest in his own right, leading to the possibility of Premier League sides prising him away from the La Liga giants at the end of the season.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has previously described Varane as ‘the best young defender in the world’ during his time in charge of the centre back at Real Madrid – and the report suggests that Mourinho is keen on being reunited with his former protege at Stamford Bridge.
Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United are set to provide stern competition for the player’s signature, however, with the Red Devils arguably more in need of central defensive reinforcements than the current Premier League leaders and perhaps in a better position to offer Varane immediate first team action.
