The 21-year-old is a highly regarded talent who has attracted plenty of interest from top clubs in recent times, though Real had long looked the favourites to snap him up this winter.

However, it now looks as though the Spanish giants have cooled their interest in Silva, leaving Arsenal as the new favourites to win the race for his signature.

Arsene Wenger’s side are in need of improvements in the middle of the park, with the likes of Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere currently out injured while Mathieu Flamini has struggled for form.

Youngster Francis Coquelin was recalled from loan from Charlton Athletic, but the Gunners clearly need more options in that part of the pitch and could now have more of a chance of bringing in the exciting Brazilian Silva.
