The Gunners set to thrash out a deal for Serie A star Mattia Destro.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to bring another striker to the Emirates Stadium after allowing both Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo to depart the club on loan deals this January, with the Daily Star reporting that Wenger’s main target is set to be AS Roma and Italy centre forward Mattia Destro.
Indeed, the report indicates that talks between the Gunners and their Roman counterparts are set to take place tomorrow to discuss the possibility of bringing Destro to the Premier League, just 48 hours after the Italian international rescued Rudi Garcia’s side with an equaliser against Palermo as Roma were held to a draw in Sicily.
Despite that particular Destro strike ending a lengthy goal drought, the striker has an impressive goalscoring ratio for Roma, but this has not persuaded former Lille manager Garcia to offer him anything more than a bit-part role at the Stadio Olimpico, with the evergreen Francesco Totti generally preferred as a false nine.
This could open up the opportunity for Arsenal to lure the Italian to north London, although he would still have to compete with Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Joel Campbell for a place in the team.
