Both Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing Benedikt Howedes this summer…

Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head over German centre-back Benedikt Howedes during the summer transfer window, with both sides still keen on expanding their defensive options, reports the Daily Mirror.

The 26-year-old Schalke star is valued at around £14m, and is seen as the perfect addition to both sides defensive woes. Arsenal signed Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista in January, but are arguably a man short, while United are still on the lookout for a new long-term option.

Arsene Wenger also has Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at his disposal, but there are doubts over the former, whose injury problems have continued to cause problems this campaign. The Gunners boss could even see Howedes as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman.

According to the source, the North London side have watched the player on a number of occasions, most recently on Tuesday – when Howedes scored during the 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich.

Louis van Gaal’s side lost Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra last year, while their new look back-four has attracted plenty of criticism so far this season, despite their success and lofty league position.
