The Dutch manager hasn’t been impressed by the efforts of the England international pair and will look to use funds from their respective sales to boost his transfer pot.
Van Gaal is pushing to mould a three man back-line and doesn’t believe either Smalling or Jones have adaptable well to the change in defensive style.
Man United’s defence has certainly been shaky this term and the Old Trafford side have struggled to secure clean sheets on a regular basis.
Louis van Gaal will look to bring in world-class replacements in the form of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Atletico Madrid hard-man Diego Godin.
Hummels may prove an easier nut to crack than Godin given just how far Jurgen Klopp’s side have sunk this term, the Westfalenstadion side being near the foot of the Bundesliga, and the World Cup winner may well be tempted by a fresh challenge.
Man United will however need to secure a Champions League berth in order to tempt big names this summer.
