Luis Suarez was on the scoresheet again for Barcelona as they thrashed Rayo Vallecano 6-1 to march top of La Liga – quite a turnaround for both the club and the player himself after a slow start to the season.

With Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo starting off in an unstoppable form, Barca stuttered to find their feet under a fourth manager in as many years in Luis Enrique, with some speculation that the Spanish tactician could struggle to get so many talented attacking players together in the same team.

Suarez was the one who really struggled to start with, putting in some hard-working displays and notching up a number of assists, though the goals were not flowing in the same way they were during his immense final season with Liverpool that prompted the Catalan giants to pay £75m for him.

Still, the 28-year-old now has an incredible six goals in his last four games, following a run of just two goals in his previous eight appearances and just seven for the season overall. After missing pre-season and struggling for fitness after a lengthy spell out due to his FIFA ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, Suarez is now looking like the player we saw for Liverpool – fully fit, confident and clicking with his fellow world class team-mates.

After Suarez and Barcelona as a whole were written off by so many at the start of the season, could this recent rise, accompanied by a place in the Copa del Rey final and a good 2-1 win away to Manchester City to all but wrap up a quarter-final place in the Champions League, be the start of something bigger for the club, with the Uruguayan at the heart of it as he so nearly was in his final season in the Premier League.
