The big Serbian international will be thrown back into the action against the Ligue 1 giants on Wednesday evening after serving out a two-match ban, and Mourinho believes his involvement can make all the difference.
And Mourinho even paid tribute to the club for forking out the cash to bring him back after Carlo Ancelotti sold him on in 2011.
“The club had Matic here but in a deal he left. If I was still here — a left footed player, 1.95 metres tall, position: midfield — he would never, never, never leave. Never. So I think Chelsea were brave in bringing him back,” Mourinho said.
“Because, if in this world you want to do the best for your club you don’t think about yourself, you don’t protect yourself from possible critics.
“You simply do what you think is the best. And in that time we wanted a midfield player.
“We had on the table three or four but the best one was a former Chelsea player.
“A player that Chelsea — I don’t say lost — but Chelsea were still brave to say ‘If we are sure this is the right one and if we are sure he is the best one.
“We are sure he is going to be a success here.
