The 24-year-old has been in amazing form all season, and without him it is unlikely the Red Devils would have the third best defensive record in the Premier League. They have conceded a mere 27 goals in the 30 matches so far.

With the keeper rated at around the £50 million mark it would be a major blow to the club were he to depart for nothing. At the same time manager Louis van Gaal would be left with a problem to deal with if the goalie left. Back up Victor Valdes is 33-years-old, and the Dutchman could have to look for a replacement for his current number one.

The Spain international is supposedly not interested in signing a new contract to stay at Old Trafford. This could lead to United having to sell him in the summer in order to get some sort of return from what is one of their prize assets.

A United insider said: “It has turned into the worst-case scenario. There has been no indication that de Gea will sign a new contract and at some point a decision will have to be made when to cash in on him. When a player enters the final 12 to 18 months of his contract, his value begins to drop dramatically.

“There’s talk of being worth £50 million, but that is unrealistic given there is probably only one club he would sign for.”
