The Blues appear keen to join the race for the in-form 25-year-old, who has become regarded as one of the best defensive midfield players in the Premier League with his fine performances this season.
According to the Metro, this could see Chelsea try an exchange deal with the Saints, offering unwanted squad player John Obi Mikel to the club in return for the Frenchman.
This would no doubt be a major blow for Arsenal in their hunt for a new signing in that part of the pitch, with additions clearly needed after some poor form from the likes of Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere this season prior to their injuries.
Chelsea, meanwhile, already have options such as Nemanja Matic and Ramires for that role and look strong in all areas as they storm towards the Premier League title.
