The 21-year-old highly-rated Dutch winger will become United’s first signing of the summer when he completes a reported £25million (via the Mirror) move from Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven once the transfer window opens next month.
Depay has scored a fantastic 21 goals in just 28 league games so far this season for PSV, and it is that record in front of goal which has prompted comparisons to Messi from van Gaal:
“He’s a goal-scoring winger and there aren’t so many of them in the world,” the Red Devils boss said at a press conference (via Mirror Online)
“Lionel Messi is one of those but now I think we have to talk about the game against Crystal Palace and we have to focus on this and the coming three games. That’s more important,” he added.
The signing of Depay has been widely praised by many former United players including Paul Scholes, who wrote in his column for the Independent that he expects the winger to flourish in the Barclays Premier League next season.
United are back in action on Saturday evening, with the Old Trafford outfit hoping to end a run of three straight defeats when they face Crystal Palace. They will also be looking to extend their lead over fierce rivals Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification to seven points.
