Chelsea are close to sealing a deal for former Arsenal star and current Barcelona man Alex Song, reports the Daily Express.
Both Liverpool and the Gunners were hoping to make a move for the 27-year-old, who impressed on loan at West Ham last season. With the midfielder both Premier League quality and counting as home grown, he has become much sought after in the transfer window.
The Cameroon international has two years left on his deal at the Camp Nou, and the Blues are hoping to conclude a £6 million deal for him. If he were to join the Stamford Bridge outfit it is unlikely he would be a regular starter, with Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas holding down the two midfield positions with great aplomb in the last campaign.
However, with John Obi Mikel being linked to a move away from the London side by the Daily Express, Song could still fulfill an important role in the squad. Chelsea will be looking for extra strength in depth after failing to do justice to themselves in the Champions League last season. With more players they will be able to rest key stars more and be ready for the European fixtures.
