Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has tipped Victor Valdes to be the ideal replacement for David de Gea if he leaves for Real Madrid this summer.

The Dutchman, who retired from the game back in 2011 to be replaced by De Gea as number one, feels Valdes looks the ready-made solution to solve United’s goalkeeping problems if they lose their star player.

De Gea had an outstanding season for the Red Devils in 2014/15, making it into the PFA Team of the Year and now becoming a priority target for Real in the transfer market.

Still, United did move to sign former Barcelona shot-stopper Valdes on a free in the middle of the season, with the 33-year-old serving as backup initially, but now looking like a contender to be first choice next term, van der Sar told BBC Sport.

“Maybe they have the solution already in-house in Victor Valdes,” the 44-year-old said.

“It depends whether they are looking for someone with reaction saves or someone who is commanding and a more outfield type of player.

“If your team plays further away from goal and you have a goalkeeper who likes to protect his six-yard box, then the match will not be there.

“Barcelona played a lot away from their goal and that is something Van Gaal finds important. Valdes has a lot of experience and a great pedigree.”
