Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on the club to continue their spending spree by re-signing Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils completed deals for Italian defender Matteo Darmian, France international Morgan Schneiderlin and German World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger [via Mail Sport] over the last few days and are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market.

Further reinforcements in defensive and attacking areas are expected before the window closes on September 1 and Ferdinand posted a message via his official Instagram account on Monday night to plead with his former club to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

If United were able to prize the Portuguese international away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer then it would be yet another major statement of intent from manager Louis van Gaal, who is assembling a squad that looks capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Since leaving Manchester in 2009, Ronaldo has developed into a goalscoring machine and finished last season with three hat-tricks in a row for club and country.

Could the 30-year-old be tempted to return to United after a enduring a trophyless campaign with Los Blancos last year?
