Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez has completed his medical at Fiorentina and is on the brink of completing a move to the Viola.

The news may come as a blow to both Arsenal and Manchester United [ITV Sport].

Both the Gunners and the Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the 28-year-old, although the pair of Premier League heavyweights look set to miss out on the experienced star.

Suarez has enjoyed a magnificent five-year spell at Atletico, and has been a key figure of Diego Simeone’s collective.

During his time at the Vicente Calderon, he was won the Liga BBVA title, the Copa del Rey and the Europa League. He was also part of the squad that reached the final of the Champions League in 2014, although he was an unused substitute as Atleti were defeated 4-1 by rivals Real Madrid after extra time.

He now looks set for a departure, and a statement on the Colchoneros’ official website [via Sky Sports], has confirmed that the midfielder is leaving the club and on his way to Tuscany.

“The agreement between the clubs and the player is complete and will be formalised in the coming hours,” the announcement began.

“He will play in Serie A after wearing red and white for the last five seasons. The club wish the player the best of luck in this new stage of his career.”
