Former Manchester United star set to replace new Liverpool signing in SURPRISE move

Former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov looks set to replace new Liverpool signing Christian Benteke at Aston Villa, reports the Daily Express.

This is after the striker ended his holiday to Bulgaria to finalise a move. Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov had originally told Tim Sherwood that the player was ready to return to English football.

The Villans sold their star player to the Merseyside outfit last week for £32.5 million, and Sherwood has a tough task replacing what was possibly the best player at the club. Over the last three seasons the 24-year-old has scored 49 goals in 101 games, leaving a big hole in the squad with his departure.

However, it now seems that the former Tottenham boss has found the man he wants, and it is another who has featured for Spurs before. Berbatov is a free agent after his contract with AS Monaco came to an end, and is a proven Premier League talent after impressing with the North London outfit, United, and Fulham in the past.

At 34-years-old, the Bulgarian isn’t a long-term option for the Midlands side. That may be Jordan Ayew, who signed for them this week on a five-year deal [BBC]. The 23-year-old may need some time to bed in at Villa Park after coming from Ligue 1 though, and Berbatov would be perfect for this role.
