Middlesbrough’s Under-18s ensured that it would be a day to forget for Manchester United with a 2-1 comeback victory over the young Red Devils this afternoon.

Indy Boonen and Angel Gomes combined for a sublime United opener before the break but two goals in 10 second-half minutes turned things around for Middlesbrough.

Marcus Tavernier bagged the winner for the visitors at Carrington, converting at the back post after the non-existent United defence had left him in acres of space.

United’s afternoon got worse as their senior side lost 2-1 at home to Norwich City for a sixth winless game in all competitions which increase the pressure on Louis van Gaal.

In contrast, it was a wonderful day for Boro, whose first team ended the last unbeaten record in England by brushing aside Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 at the Amex Stadium.

Aitor Karanka’s promotion hopefuls, who were watched by sacked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, as ITV reports, are now two points clear of Derby County at the top of the Championship.
