Manchester United hierarchy green-light huge January transfer spree

Manchester United officials have reportedly given the go-ahead for the club to spend heavily in the January transfer window in order to get back on track.

The Red Devils have suffered their worst December ever after going eight games without a victory in all competitions, which has seen their campaign fall apart.

Having been eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages, United have also fallen out of the top four as they continue to slide down the standings and lose ground on their title rivals.

As a result, the board have been forced into action and are expected to help boss Louis van Gaal by giving him transfer funds to strengthen the squad next month, as reported by The Mirror.

According to the report, United have already identified several targets that they will pursue in January, with Romelu Lukaku’s form this season ensuring that the Belgian makes it on to their shortlist.

The Everton striker would certainly provide United with a boost up front, while teammate John Stones remains on the radar for the Premier League giants too.

However, The Mirror claim that United could wait until the summer to try and sign the England defender, with Everton likely to dismiss all enquiries for the talented centre-back just as they did in the summer amid interest from Chelsea.

Regardless of the transfer rumours, Van Gaal’s immediate focus will be on Saturday’s encounter with Swansea City, as the visitors arrive at Old Trafford having kept three consecutive clean sheets which in turn could spell trouble for United who have frustrated their fans with a lack of goals all season.
