First Arsenal transfer target of 2016 passes medical, £5m move imminent

Arsenal are poised to be the first big Premier League club to make some noise in the January transfer window, augmenting their midfield depth by adding FC Basel starlet Mohamed Elneny in the coming days.

According to the Daily Mail, Elneny has passed his medical with the Gunners and will complete his £5 million transfer to the team next week or so. The international clearance is reportedly the main obstacle remaining at this time.

The 23-year-old Egyptian midfielder has won three straight Swiss Super League titles with Basel and scored twice in the Europa League this season. He has been capped several dozen times for Egypt and scored a goal against Chad in the country’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match in November.

The Daily Mail noted that Elneny would be available in time for Arsenal’s clash with Sunderland in the FA Cup third-round and would also be eligible for the Champions League when they take on Barcelona in the Round of 16.
