Aston Villa travelled to Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup looking for a confidence boost on Saturday, and Micah Richards got them off to a perfect start with this effort to break the deadlock.
The Premier League strugglers haven’t won a game in all competitions in their last 15 outings, as they continue to sit bottom of the table with just one victory all season.
As a result, relegation looks merely inevitable for Remi Garde’s side, but the Villa supporters were afforded an afternoon to look forward to with the pressure off as the Frenchman looks to mastermind a deep cup run.
Although the hosts produced a few scary moments for their rivals, it was Richards to made the decisive contribution in the opening 45 minutes as he sent his effort low into the bottom left corner to give the Villa fans a reason to smile.
It came after the supporters had made their displeasure clear to the players as they arrived at the stadium on the team bus, but there was a significant Villa contingent in the stands as they continue to hope to witness a rare win.
Whether or not they are able to hold on to their advantage remains to be seen, but a win this weekend could give Villa a much-needed morale boost which they will aim to take with into next weekend’s league clash against Crystal Palace as they hope to build some momentum.
