AC Milan secured a 3-0 win over city rivals Inter at the San Siro on Sunday night, with Alex, Carlos Bacca and M’Baye Niang scoring the goals.

While the Brazilian defender had given the ‘hosts’ the lead in the first half, Bacca struck just minutes after Mauro Icardi had missed a penalty for the Nerazzurri to double Milan’s lead.

After an even first-half in which both sides had chances to find the back of the net and looked well matched in midfield, Roberto Mancini was sent off from the sidelines as tempers flared. The Italian tactician’s absence on the bench arguably contributed to his side capitulating, although they will feel that the scoreline was harsh.

While Niang provided the assist for the second, the young forward got himself on the scoresheet minutes later at the second time of asking, as Samir Handanovic saved his initial effort, to spark wild scenes in the red and black sections of the stadium.

With club President Silvio Berlusconi in attendance and beaming from ear to ear, it was certainly an important night for Milan as they moved to within five points of their rivals who currently sit in fourth place in the Serie A standings.

Inter will rue their missed opportunity to get back on level terms through Icardi, but Milan deserved their win as they took their chances and worked tirelessly throughout to secure a morale-boosting victory to extend their unbeaten run to six games in all competitions.

Mihajlovic’s men take on Palermo next Wednesday night, while Inter will be looking to bounce back against Chievo.
