It goes without saying that any team that has Lionel Messi can upset the hierarchy of all of European football. But having played under Pep Guardiola in the past, the ex-Barca manager’s new club, Manchester City, could quickly become a major target for the Ballon d’Or winner – and the Citizens appear to be well-aware on that possibility.
According to the Guardian [per NBC Sports], Manchester City are ‘banking on Pep Guardiola’ to attract world superstars to the Etihad and have Lionel Messi at the top of their transfer wish list. Man City would have several significant advantages in the race for Messi, between Guardiola and several Argentine countrymen gracing the ranks such as Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi, Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis.
However, there are no serious indications that Messi has any interest in leaving Barcelona. In addition, there have been rumors that Luis Suarez or Neymar could have interest in following Guardiola to England.
