This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Lionel Messi’s international career as the Barcelona superstar quit Argentina duty after their Copa America final defeat to Chile.

Messi missed a penalty in the shootout heartbreak as he experienced losing in a final with his country for a fourth time – three Copa America final defeats and the 2014 World Cup final.

The 29-year-old announced after this latest setback that he is retiring from international football, and his last kick in an Argentina shirt is not one that he will want to remember.

“It’s not meant for me. For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion,” the 29-year-old is quoted as saying by BBC Sport following the match.

Messi scored an outstanding free-kick in the semi-final win over USA to surpass Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s leading scorer with 55 goals in 113 caps. And that is how he will finish.
