Manchester United to press on with £25m defensive transfer this weekend

Manchester United reportedly want to sign AS Monaco full-back Fabinho and are expected to make a bid for the South American within days.

Reports in Italy, cited in The Sun, claim that the Red Devils are preparing a £25m offer for the Brazilian and that the deal could go through quickly.

According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho is keen to shore up United’s defence, which conceded four in a pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund today.

Fabinho is a 22-year-old right-back who is second in line to Dani Alves for the national team and was part of Brazil’s last two Copa America squads.

Antonio Valencia has captained United in recent friendlies, so seems poised for a senior role under Mourinho, which could spell bad news for Matteo Darmian.

The Italian international enjoyed mixed fortunes in his debut season at Old Trafford and The Sun reports that Mourinho would sanction his departure.
