Real Madrid star a huge doubt for pivotal Clasico

Gareth Bale is a doubt for next weekend’s El Clasico after hurting his ankle last night against Sporting Lisbon.

The Welshman started the game in Portugal just 48 hours after starting in the Madrid derby against Atletico, and helped his side go a goal up. However an hour in he twisted his ankle and was immediately withdrawn by his manager Zinedine Zidane.

“He suffered more of a twist than a knock, but we will have to wait and see what the problem is,” Zidane is quoted as saying.

Madrid lead through Raphael Varane’s goal for most of the game, only to find ten man Sporting strike back through a penalty. All seemed set for a draw, especially with Bale off the pitch. But a late Karim Benzema goal saved his team’s blushes.

Real, who have a four point lead over Barcelona in La Liga after beating cross-town rivals Atleti 3-0, go to the Nou Camp next weekend for a game that will go a long way to deciding the destination of the title this year.
