‘What an idiot’ – Chelsea ace faces backlash from fans after contentious statement

It’s probably worth starting off by stating that Tiemoue Bakayoko is a brave man, or a confident one at least. The Chelsea midfielder has sparked a reaction from supporters.

After failing to make the cut for the latest France squad, it seems Bakayoko was left pretty disappointed as he’s happy with the start he’s made to the new season.

The 23-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side, scoring twice and providing three assists, although there are still clearly elements of his game that need improvement and developing as he matures with experience in the Premier League.

However, he feels as though he’s as good as any of the other players selected by Didier Deschamps for the international friendlies over the break with the World Cup in mind next summer in Russia, but the mention of teammate N’Golo Kante was a step too far for these supporters.

“I feel [Adrien] Rabiot, Kante, [Blaise] Matuidi, [Corentin] Tolisso are not better than me. I respect the coach’s decision and I also respect the players who were called up – they are talented, some are friends of mine,” he is quoted as saying by the Metro.

“I’d like to be with them. But I’m not below them.”

Cue the reaction from Chelsea supporters who weren’t particularly kind on him. On one hand, he should have probably expected this reaction. On the other, players have to be confident and ambitious about their own quality, if you don’t believe you’re the best then you’re probably not going to be the best…
