Arsenal are reportedly the bookies’ favourites to seal a surprise transfer move for Manchester United backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The experienced Argentine has shone as a squad player for the Red Devils, showing that he could perhaps be worth of a regular starting place at most top clubs.

Unfortunately for him, Romero is behind the world class David de Gea in this current United squad, something few ‘keepers in the world could contend with.

According to the Daily Star, bookmakers Ladbrokes are making Arsenal the current favourites to snap up Romero if he does end up leaving Old Trafford in search of first-team football.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: ‘With David de Gea on the scene, Romero is never going to break into Mourinho’s first-team plans – and it now looks likely that Wenger will take advantage of the Argentine’s availability.’

Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, so it may be that replacing the ageing and declining Petr Cech is on Arsene Wenger’s radar.

Don Balon have linked the Gunners, PSG and Juventus with the Germany international, but he seems a far more ambitious target than Romero.

While United may not be keen on selling the 93-cap 30-year-old to a Premier League rival, he won’t be seen as such a key figure as Ter Stegen is for Barca.

That said, Don Balon have also suggested United’s first-choice De Gea has recently held talks with Real Madrid over a transfer, so Romero might need to stick around to replace him as first choice in the near future.
