Euro giants willing to make key sacrifice to pave way for Barcelona raid

Despite the fact that Edinson Cavani has played a fundamental role in Paris Saint-Germain’s recent success, it’s reported he could be sold to pave the way for Barcelona’s Luis Suarez.

The 31-year-old has been with the French giants since 2013, scoring 170 goals in 245 games which in turn has led to four Ligue 1 titles and a whopping 12 domestic cups.

Further, he’s also coming off the back of a campaign in which he scored 40 goals in just 47 games, his second most prolific season with PSG, and so on that basis, it doesn’t seem like a logical decision to potentially send him packing this summer.

According to Sport, that’s exactly what the French outfit could do as it’s claimed that Cavani could be sacrificed in order for the club to launch a raid on Barcelona for Suarez.

Cavani’s compatriot has been equally as crucial to the Catalan giants since moving to the Nou Camp in 2014, bagging 152 goals in 198 games for the reigning La Liga champions.

In turn, it’s questionable as to whether he’s even a viable target as he remains a fundamental figure in Ernesto Valverde’s line-up, while Sport add that relations between the two clubs could be another obstacle that must be overcome.

With all that in mind, it does seem a long shot that PSG will be able to prise Suarez away from Barcelona, and that would then raise question marks over their reported openness towards selling Cavani.

One argument that could be made in favour of making such a change is that despite Cavani’s impressive haul domestically, he hasn’t been able to lead PSG to success in the Champions League. That’s a competition Suarez has got real pedigree in, and so reuniting him with Neymar in Paris could be the move that helps the club take that next step in Europe.
