Unai Emery won’t rule out Arsenal completing late transfer swoop for World Cup winner

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has suggested he’s open to signing French midfielder Steven N’Zonzi from Sevilla before the transfer window shuts in seven days.

The 29-year-old has spent the summer in Russia with the French World Cup squad which managed to lift the trophy following a glorious 4-2 final victory against Croatia. N’Zonzi only started one game in the competition but his stock has only risen since as he’s been linked with several high profile European clubs.

The 6ft 6in giant has spent the last three years of his career in La Liga with Sevilla, having joined the club from Stoke City in the Premier League. He has come a long way since his time in England, transforming into a reliable and commanding midfielder capable of driving his team forward from the middle of the park.

According to Metro Sport, Arsenal has been interested in N’Zonzi all summer and as the beginning of the new season rapidly approaches, Unai Emery may still try to agree on a deal with Sevilla for his services.

“At the moment I’m very happy with the players that are here with us,” said the Gunners boss, as Metro Sport reports.

“We also have others still to come, like Nacho Monreal, Lucas [Torreira] and [Granit] Xhaka, who will start to get minutes on Saturday.

“I am telling you that we’re speaking inside and we are okay. There is only a possibility that we sign someone if it’s a good opportunity.”

The Spanish coach remained coy on speculation but in refusing to rule out further spending may have given supporters fresh hope of seeing N’Zonzi in Arsenal shirt next season.

The club has been without a leader in the middle of the park for many years now and the former Stoke man could certainly bring a hard outer exterior combined with an aggressive style and composure to give the team an extra dimension ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
