Manchester United open talks over €50m transfer after Jose Mourinho gets close look at the player

Manchester United have reportedly opened talks over the potential transfer of Jerome Boateng after playing against him in last night’s friendly with Bayern Munich.

The Germany international has been tentatively linked as a target for United on occasion this summer, but links have now strengthened after last night’s game at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern won 1-0 as Jose Mourinho’s team put in another unconvincing pre-season display, with Javi Martinez deciding the affair.

Shortly afterwards, German source Bild claimed negotiations had opened over a deal to take Boateng to Old Trafford this summer for around €50million.

The report states Bayern would sell the World Cup-winning centre-back for that price, and this story comes amid another links with the Red Devils and big names at the back.

Sky Sports also claim United are chasing Leicester City star Harry Maguire, while the Daily Mirror yesterday reported that a deal to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld was close.

Given defence is an area of weakness for Mourinho’s squad, it may well be that the Portuguese tries to bring in more than one name in that area as he looks for upgrades on players like Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof.

Only Eric Bailly looks good enough as a long-term solution in that position, and he’s had his injury troubles in his time at United so far.

Fans would surely be happy with Boateng and one other player to tighten up that back line.
