Third-season syndrome looms for Mourinho but Alexis provides spark of hope – Manchester United 2018/19 season preview

Kits

Whatever the issues on and off the pitch, there’s no doubt the United kits this season are looking pretty decent.

The home kit is probably the weakest, with a bit too much black due to the change from traditional white shorts, but both away strips are among the finest in the Premier League.

That navy blue and gold strip is a thing of beauty, and though may scoff at pink football kits, we love this leaked third kit that’s been doing the rounds, though it’s not yet been officially confirmed.

Manchester United’s new kits look pretty good, to be fair

Reasons to be positive

The mood may not be particularly positive right now, but United fans perhaps shouldn’t get too down in the dumps just yet.

As noted above, in players like Sanchez, Pogba and Lukaku they have some of the best attacking talent in the Premier League, and indeed Europe.

And while Mourinho is a difficult character, there’s no doubting he has the experience and winning mentality to do better this time around than he has in his first two years at Old Trafford.

Causes for concern

Okay, we had to find reasons to be positive above, but in truth, there is probably a lot more wrong at United right now, from the look of things.

Yes, there is world class talent in this squad like Sanchez and Pogba, but Mourinho has shown no sign so far of knowing how to get the best out of them, and seems to spend more time criticising his players and moaning about a lack of signings than doing anything constructive to improve their game.

Quite why the club couldn’t get more players in this summer is beyond pretty much everyone, but it doesn’t point to a healthy set-up behind the scenes if the manager has been so publicly frustrated about the lack of activity.

United were a distant second to City last season and since then Liverpool have improved hugely. A title challenge this time around just looks hugely unlikely for so many reasons.

A top four finish and a cup win or two is surely the best to hope for in 2018/19.
