‘We’re aiming for the top six’ states Newcastle defender
by stresster on July 10th, 2008Apparently Steven Taylor wasn’t even drunk when he made the above utterance, although surely it’s a lot to ask of him and his Newcastle team if they’re going to finish above the likes of Everton, Spurs, Man City, Villa and Portsmouth next season. When the likes of Taylor make the ‘top six’ claim, surely they mean that their team is going for fifth or sixth, but stating ‘top six’ just sounds more ambitious.
Anyway, Setanta reveal that the Geordies masses are undergoing the annual ‘expectations whipped into a frenzy of hysteria’ phase, before they land flat on their faces and call for the head of Kevin Keegan. Taylor claims they’re reaching for the stars, but will they by lying in the gutter come the end of the season.
“We are aiming for the top six,” Taylor told Setanta Sports News. “We have got our sights aimed high.
“The gaffer is away today, but hopefully he will come back with a few new signings. We do need them as we are a small squad, but we are all together.”
Where will Newcastle United finish next season? While it’s reasonable to assume that the top four and the bottom four is out of the question, how does 11th sound to Magpies fans? Maybe 10th at a push and entry into Europe by virtue of the Fair Play award?

wow, what a shock. an aerticle about newcastle on CO written in a mocking tone.
if taylor had come out and said “we’re aiming for midtable” you’d have slagged him off for having no ambition.
why shouldn’t newcastle be aiming for the top 6?

At this moment in time I think 10th place is about right, but hopefully with some astute signings we can maybe improve on that.Top six a definite no.That’s not being pessimistic, but after 52 years in bed with the TOON, I’m realistic!!.

Thought geordies liked banter.

there’s banter Greg, and then there’s the drivel that gets written about NUFC on a daily basis.
articles such as this serve as nothing more than blatant flame-baiting, and frankly it’s pathetic.

Greg… As Chris says, with the load we take on a daily basis, we are stick to the stomach of other fans concern (or lack) with our club… Yes we arent in a good state these days, but its not more than 5 seasons ago that we played champs league, so why is it SO impossible for us to even get an UEFA cup place with a bit of wise investment?
